Equitable representation, an elixir for even development of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency

Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency is made up of three LGA,s namely, Umuahia north, Umuahia south and Ikwuano. Since 1999 the three LGA,s has had an unwritten agreement on their representative pattern in the national assembly.

It has become politically methodistical since the coming of the 3rd republic in 1999, with honourable Iheanacho Obioma, form Umuahia south taking the first shot between 1999-2003, between 2003-2007, it moved to Ikwuano and Emeka Atuma (hon.), took their turn followed by hon. Stanley Ohajiriuka, 2007-2011 who got the privilege of representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency when it became the turn of Umuahia north.

Upon the completion of the first phase of the rotational cycle which saw the three local governments taking a turn of four years each at the green chambers to represent Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, the new sequence which took off in 2011 had hon. Udo Oluchi Ibeji, from Umuahia south doing a four year term that terminated in 2015, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, from Ikwuano was the next to benefit from the pact and he is presently manning the Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency seat at the national assembly.

Spirit of equity, justice, brotherhood and fairness demands that Umuahia north should be given their second time in 2019, upon the completion of Ikwuano,s turn, but the body language and political movements of the present occupant of the office of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency is suggestive of his unwillingness to honour the agreement that has existed and improved the political brotherhood, love and peace that has been planted and nurtured in Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency.

Umuahia north is one LGA that houses two brother clans of Ibeku and Ohuhu and we share our political offices amongst us in turns, Ibeku having taken their turn in 2007-2011 with hon. Ohajiriuka, it is now the undeniable right of the Ohuhu clan to do theirs so as to complete the cycle.

It will be politically incorrect, unjust and a distortion of political equilibrium if the process of power sharing amongst the three LGA,s is distorted to favour an individual.

For an individual to attempt to distort the process of unity, brotherhood and the principle of equity that has been rooted for 18 years and counting, for no reason but selfishness and wanton self-enrichment is one that cannot be allowed to stand, but will rather be resisted with every political weapon available to us.

The balance of power and responsibility that has been created between the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia can best be described as the metaphor for equitable development of the constituency and cannot be allowed to be dismantled by sheer greed and quest to hold on power.

The peace, unity and even development of Ikwuano/Umuahia is greater than any individual’s selfish ambition and Ndi Ohuhu cannot afford to sacrifice their right for the interest of anybody or group of persons.

No single individuals’ ambition will be allowed to threaten the peaceful coexistence or dismantle the political balance of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency.

A renowned philosopher, D. H. Lawrence, said and I quote, Ethics and equity and the principles of justice do not change with the calendar.
