Nigeria warns President Trump that It will not tolerate any form of harassment

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP,  has called on Nigeria’s Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, to “inform the USA President, Donald Trump, that Nigeria would not tolerate any shape of harassment and unfair treatment of its citizens with valid multiple-entry US visas at US airports.

In a declaration signed by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, and made available to newsmen in Abuja, SERAP stated it has come to its notice cases of Nigerians with legitimate visas being denied entry into the United States.

This accompanied warning by way of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa that Nigerians who've no compelling or pressing purpose to travel to america to delay their journey plans until the brand new management’s coverage on immigration is cleared.

SERAP statement reads, “The Nigerian authorities have to rise up to Trump and shield Nigerians’ across the world recognized proper to freedom of movement simply because the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi did for his personal residents. The Iraqi chief ensured that his country became taken off the obnoxious government order list. Osinbajo should now show the leadership needed to defend the country's citizens who are facing unfair remedy inside the arms of US immigration officials.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) ensures liberty of movement, and provides in article 13 that, “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence inside the borders of every State. 2. Everyone has the proper to depart any country, consisting of his very own, and to go back to his country. The Declaration also ensures the proper of all and sundry consisting of Nigerians to a social and worldwide order wherein the rights and freedoms set forth inside the Declaration can be absolutely realised.

“SERAP notes that Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, chaired the UDHR drafting committee. On the basis of the UDHR, persons are entitled to move from one place to another and to establish themselves in a place of their choice. The enjoyment of this right must not be made dependent on any particular purpose or reason for the person wanting to move or to stay in a place. Any restrictions must be in conformity with international standards.

“The Nigerian authorities must ensure that Nigerians’ liberty of movement is protected from interference by the Trump government. The authorities should carefully study the revised executive order and take proactive measures to prevent any harassment and unfair treatment of Nigerians in the hands of US immigration officers.”
