11 Months After, Enyimba Stadium Turns To Crusade Ground

Before he became the governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu made a promise at his 2015 governorship campaign to turn Aba, Enyimba Football Club Stadium, to International Standard, by re-grassing the entire pitch, and change the face of the whole stadium.

The promise seems to become a reality, as at 10th months after he was sworn-in as the governor of Abia State, Dr. Ikpeazu's administration began work on the stadium, the work started on 22nd February 2016.

But before that, it will be recalled that Enyimba of Aba was the champions of Nigeria, as they have won many trophies both Africa and national... The champions shined brighter only in the administration of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, former Abia State governor, 1999-2007.

Contrary to that, on February 25th, 2016, the contractor behind the reconstruction, Monimichelle promised to deliver the job within just one week. Speaking with newsmen, Monimichelle’s CEO, Ebi Egbe said, 'with the job done so far, the stadium could be ready in one week once the needed materials are imported into the country'.

Findings proves that serious work was going on at the stadium as at February 2016, even when Abacityblog correspondent visited the stadium, he was very happy at the level of the work going on in the stadium. But that was never the case, what the residents of Aba, and supporters of the Enyimba FC want, is to see the club playing at their ground.

The work at the stadium has caused lots of damages to the club, the champions, Enyimba FC lost lots of games last year 2016, as all their home games were been played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt while domestic games have been played at the Umuahia Township Stadium and Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Lots of worries and calls were being made to ascertain the reason why the stadium was never ready as promised by the contractor.

When news agency of Nigeria interviewed the contractor, Ebi Egbe, he said; “Except for payment delays, the project will be completed before the middle of April to enable the team play their next home match on it,’’

That statement was made by the contractor behind the job, Mr. Ebi Egbe on 15th March 2016. He promised that the work on the stadium will be ready by April last 2016, but his conclusion remains lack of funds!

On 23rd June 2016, the Abia State Commissioner for Sport, Chinwe Nwanganga said that Enyimba FC will return to the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba in August.

According to him; “Fans of Enyimba are tired of promises (of a date when the club will return to Aba).

“I am, however assuring you that God willing, our final Caf Champions League group game at home (against Mamelodi Sundowns between August 22-24) will be played in Aba.

The above statement was made by the Abia State Commissioner for Sport, Chinwe Nwanganga last year June 2016.

In a recent finding, work has stopped at the stadium for over seven months now, the stadium, which has been floored has turn into a crusade ground.

Yes, we all know that churches do hire International stadiums for their annual conventions, but that always happens while the stadium is in order.

Turning Aba Enyimba Stadium into a full crusade ground just to make money while the club which supposed to make use of the stadium are playing all their home matches at away, is something to talk about.

Now what happened to the completion of the stadium? The contractor has left the job over lack of funds, in his recent interview with Rhema FM Aba, Mr. Ebi Egbe said; right now, I don't know what to say, but I can assure you that the stadium will be ready soon, the club will play all their home matches at the stadium, but only if the Abia State government will release funds.

Meanwhile, the fans of Enyimba FC have started lamenting since last year, some said the Ikpeazu led administration should at least leave the stadium at its old look if he know that he can't complete the work.

In conclusion, contractor at the stadium has left the job waiting for the state government to release funds. The Abia State Government led Okezie Ikpeazu has never spoken on the alleged suspension of the work at the stadium, but rather they are busy collecting money from churches who has been using the stadium as crusade ground.

Ikpeazu's administration should sit-up
