Obuaku city was conceived by the Dr. Sam Mbakwe civilian administration of the old Imo State in the early 1980's. It was designed to be a beautiful city on the north bank of the Imo River.
However, the present administration of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has begun to key into it's master plan by putting in place basic infrastructure. The recently flagging off of a seaport project can attest to it. Obuaku city is in oil and gas rich Ukwa west local government area of Abia State.
It is opposite the oil and gas rich town of oyigbo[obigbo] in oyigbo local government area of Rivers State on the south bank of the imo river. The seaport which is about 23 nautical miles[45.5km] from the Atlantic ocean is bound to be a maritime hub in the west and central African sub region due to it's strategic location.
More developmental projects like industrial estates, international markets, housing estates etc needed to be put in place so that it can become a lively city mirroring Aba, the economic hub of Abia State and port harcourt, the capital of oil and gas rich rivers states in view of it's unique location.
These can be achieved by partnering with local and foreign private investors. It is also fortunate in the area of stable electric power supply as a gigantic gas fired thermal power plant, the oma power plant is currently under construction in the same local government.
The promoters of this power project can be approached by the Abia state government to execute a similar scheme where by obuaku city can exit the national grid for efficient and effective electricity supply like Aba.
Obuaku city has the potential to eclipse Aba as Abia state nay the southeast premier economic hub if it's potential is maximize.
The Enyimba city is relatively landlocked which has limited it's influence.Besides, the are no known oil and gas deposits within it's vicinity unlike the former.
Obuaku city can also save lives and properties especially people of southeast descent by serving as a safer and closer place of abode.
